From Roller Skates to Rollerman – The Evolution of Roller Sports

The year 1759 brought to us the first roller skates.  Joseph Merlin introduced his invention by roller-skating into a ballroom playing a violin. Unfortunately, he didn’t know how to stop and crashed into a full-length mirror, breaking his violin. Since then inventors have continually worked to improve on the original.  This picture is from 1905.

The sport turned into a wonderful pass time.  As this video from France attests.

Then in the 70’s the sport degenerated into something called Roller Derby:)

As time went by Roller Blades became popular but common sense did not come with your purchase.

There have been many additions and subtractions to the basic roller blade design over the years and here is one called Landrollers which are basically off-road roller blades.

From 1759 and crashing into a mirror we now have Rollerman.  I wonder what will be next in the evolution of roller sports?

For you watching please check out the talent of these kids:)
